Xii Calzada Film Festival Opens With Three International Premieres

The Rafael Serrano Cultural Centre will host the screenings of Sorda, Sirât and Romería, three films that have been screened at leading festivals and are coming to Calzada to bring the best of contemporary Spanish cinema to the public.

Calzada de Calatrava, 23rd September 2025. The 12th edition of the Calzada de Calatrava Film Festival (1 to 11 October) continues to grow and on this occasion it does so with a very special novelty: the Spanish Film Showcase – Feature Films, whose screening will take place at the Rafael Serrano Cultural Centre and which will bring viewers three recent productions that have been screened at international festivals. The public will be able to enjoy Sorda, by Eva Libertad, Sirât, by Oliver Laxe, and Romería, by Carla Simón, in a space that will become a meeting point between the public and quality cinema for several days. Tickets will be priced at 4 euros, with a 50% discount for young people up to 30 years of age.

The programme will open on 2 October at 19.30 with Sorda, by Eva Libertad, an intimate story that explores motherhood and hearing impairment through the character of Ángela, a deaf woman who faces the challenge of raising her daughter in a world that does not always understand her. With a cast headed by Miriam Garlo and Álvaro Cervantes, the 99-minute film is a sensitive drama that reflects on communication and social barriers from a profoundly human point of view.

On 5 October at 19.30, it will be the turn of Sirât, directed by Oliver Laxe, a film of intrigue and tension set in Morocco. The film tells the story of a father and brother who, in the midst of clandestine raves and desert landscapes, search for Mar, the family’s missing young woman. With actors of the stature of Sergi López and Bruno Núñez, the feature film plunges into a physical and emotional journey, impregnated with electronic music and an atmosphere of uncertainty. The 114-minute film combines drama and thriller in a story of great visual power.

The exhibition will conclude on 10 October at 21:30 with Romería, the new film by Carla Simón, one of the most renowned Spanish directors of the moment. The film takes us to Vigo, where Marina seeks to reconstruct the story of her deceased parents, marked by AIDS and drugs in the 1980s. The feature film, starring Llúcia García and Tristán Ulloa, is an emotional reflection on memory, adolescence and family ties, with a running time of 115 minutes and a look full of sensitivity and truth.

The mayoress of Calzada de Calatrava, Gema García, has expressed her satisfaction at the premiere of this exhibition within the festival and has wanted to stress the importance of having films that deal with universal themes from different perspectives. Having titles such as Sorda, Sirât and Romería in our town is a real privilege”, she pointed out. They are three feature films that “speak of motherhood, of the search and the weight of family memory, human stories that challenge and enrich us as spectators. It is a unique opportunity that I encourage all residents not to miss”, she explained. In addition, the mayoress stressed that “cinema has the wonderful ability to open our eyes to different realities and this festival is allowing us to experience this first hand in Calzada”.

For his part, the director of the festival, Hernán Valdés, underlined the cultural and cinematographic value of these screenings, stressing the quality of the selection. “Having these films in the Muestra de Cine Español – Largometrajes is another step forward in our commitment to contemporary cinema. They are feature films that have been present in prestigious competitions such as Cannes or Malaga, and that now come to Calzada to bring unique film experiences to the public”. In addition, the director stressed that this exhibition “is a way of building a bridge between the major international festivals and the citizens, and we want it to be enjoyed for what it is: an exceptional opportunity to experience the best cinema without leaving our town”, explained Valdés.

The 12th edition of the Calzada de Calatrava Film Festival reaffirms with this Spanish Film Festival – Feature Films its vocation to be a reference in the dissemination and promotion of cinema. Three proposals, three points of view and the same invitation: to let yourself be trapped by the power of the stories on the big screen.

In this twelfth edition, the Calzada de Calatrava Film Festival is sponsored by the Association for the Development of Campo de Calatrava, within the framework of the LEADER programme, co-financed by the European Union, the Government of Spain, and the Regional Government of Castilla-La Mancha.
