The actor, who has a brilliant career in the world of acting, will receive the ‘statuette’ of the festival and a well-deserved recognition on 7 August in the Patio de San Francisco of the town.

Calzada de Calatrava, 2 August 2024. The 11th Calzada de Calatrava International Film Festival will pay tribute to the renowned actor Emilio Gavira Tomás for his impeccable and brilliant career in the world of acting. The actor will receive the ‘statuette’ of the festival on August 7th (22:00) in the Patio de San Francisco of the town after a warm welcome and an emotional ceremony to praise his role in the seventh art.

Emilio Gavira is a native of Fuengirola, but practically his whole life is linked to Alcázar de San Juan, a town that has seen him grow and consolidate his career in the film industry. In fact, the Alcázar de San Juan Theatre bears his name. And no wonder, because Emilio Gavira has a long career on stage, to the point of becoming one of the most acclaimed actors. Humour is one of his hallmarks and also a skill that has made him take on countless roles.

The tribute will take place in an unbeatable setting because it will take place during the ‘Castilla-La Mancha en Paralelo’ section of the festival, where the film Tierra de nuestras madres by Liz Lobato, shot in Villacañas (Toledo), and the short films Empático, Del barrio, Roland and Próxima Parada, which are works by the film production company Santa Ana Films, based in Puertollano (Ciudad Real), will also be screened. The perfect cherry on top of a great night will come with the recognition of Emilio Gavira. Thus, the aim of the ‘Castilla-La Mancha en Paralelo’ section is to praise and recognise the values and efforts, as well as the work, of production and direction with Castilian roots. In addition to highlighting the magnificent places and destinations that Castilla-La Mancha possesses as perfect settings for turning on the cameras.

The mayoress of Calzada de Calatrava and director of the XI Calzada de Calatrava International Film Festival, Gema García, expressed her “great satisfaction and emotion for having an actor of Emilio Gavira’s calibre in our eleventh edition” and stressed that this is a tribute “more than deserved for his impeccable career in the world of cinema, with a repertoire of films and series that endorse him, as well as an outstanding theatrical career”. Emilio Gavira is “the right person to feel the warmth of our audience and to receive the ‘statuette’ of the festival”.

The director stressed that “in our festival we want to value, thank, praise and reward the work of the people of Castilla-La Mancha who work in the film industry, and in this edition it is fitting to pay tribute to one of the greatest of this land, Emilio Gavira”. Furthermore, Gema García thanked “the words and compliments that the actor himself gave us at the festival when we got in touch, as well as the fact that he accepted, without a doubt and from the first minute, our proposal as a tribute to the XI Calzada de Calatrava International Film Festival”.

In this line, Gema García has taken the opportunity to advance that “next August 7th we will live a great night in a Castilian-Manchego atmosphere, because besides paying tribute to Emilio Gavira, we will also enjoy native projections of the region, with the film Tierra de nuestras madres by Liz Lobato, who does a commendable job, as well as the Puertollano production company Santa Ana Films, which will give us the chance to enjoy their short films Empático, Del barrio, Roland and Próxima Parada”.

An impeccable career.

The actor from Alcazar has participated in a long list of films such as Nada S.A., La Navidad en sus manos, the Mortadelo y Filemón saga, El fotógrafo de Mauthausen, Campeonex, Matar a Dios, Camino or El puente de San Luis Rey, among many others. He has also played roles in series such as: La Que Se Avecina, Agente 700, El fin de la comedia, Manos a la obra, ¡Ala…Dina!, Mira lo que has hecho, Cuéntame cómo pasó and El cielo puede esperar.

He also has a very important legacy on the theatre stage with illustrious great plays such as: Carmen, Ópera sangrienta, Los misterios de la ópera, Pelo de tormenta, Black el payaso or Divinas palabras. Emilio Gavira has worked under the direction of Javier Fesser, Gerardo Vera, Carlos Saura, Francisco Nieva, Tomaz Pandur or Carles Alfaro, among other directors.

His film career has brought him several awards and nominations, such as the Ercilla Award for Best Supporting Actor and even a nomination for Best New Actor at the Spanish Film Academy’s Goya Awards for the film Snow White.

The last award he received was that of Adopted Son of Castilla-La Mancha, granted this year by the Government of Castilla-La Mancha at the ceremony for the Day of the Region. A title more than deserved for his artistic career, for his commitment to diversity and also for his contribution to the cultural scene.

Emilio Gavira will therefore be the figure to be honoured at the 11th Calzada de Calatrava International Film Festival on 7 August, specifically in the Patio de San Francisco in Calzada de Calatrava, starting at 22:00. A very special moment to reward the impeccable career of the actor from Calzada.
